Normally, I would stick to posting positive and inspiring links for the Link Of The Day, however this is one that I feel needs more attention than it is currently getting. A few days ago, Farzana Parveen, only 25 years old, was stoned to death in Pakistan because she wanted to marry some one that her family did not approve of.
The man she wanted to marry, the man she was truly in love with, was deemed unfit by her family, and thus her own family stoned her to death. These "honor killings" as they are called occurred over 800 times in 2013 alone! (Human Rights Commission of Pakistan). I strongly suggest that you read the article below from The Guardian, and consider how lucky we really are. In the United States we battle over the right to marry who we want to marry, man or woman, but we battle on a much smaller scale. At the end of the day we do not murder our own family members for being gay, or for marrying some one that we do not approve of. However in other countries this type of murder is deemed honorable, and happens almost on a daily basis.
Of course culturally we cannot fathom the idea of this being okay, but that is what is so incredible about culture. One culture can find something honorable that another country finds to be an abomination. However, I want to make clear that this act does not speak for every part of Pakistan or any one of that descent. That's just how it goes. Check out the article here, and please let me know what you think about the situation in the comments below. Are there any solutions to world problems like these, or are they so woven into the fabric of history that they are impossible to change?
