Why I Like Valentines Day
Valentine’s Day- the one holiday that is loved by many and hated by many more. The one holiday that we really struggle to understand the meaning of. For year’s now I’ve always said Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday, and received the same backlash year in and year out. However I understand this, it makes sense to me. I know that Valentine’s Day is heavily exploited by card, flower, and chocolate companies. I know that we should “love people the same everyday”. I’ve heard every argument under the sun, but I want you to try to look at it in a different light.
Valentine’s Day isn't a day where you are justified to love any more than you ever should any other day. It is not a day where you are allowed mope around and cry about being alone forever either. It’s not about how many cards you give out, how much jewelry you buy, how much chocolate you receive. As we all know, it’s about love, yet I believe it goes deeper.
Valentine’s Day is a day to remember how good it feels to spread love. It’s a day to remember how much you love your family and friends, to reflect on the great relationships you have. I hate to say it, but I don’t think we are capable of loving the same amount each day. Humans are flawed, we have bad days, we forget how much we love our families and friends every now and then. We often take them for granted, were all guilty of this. We also forget how much we are loved, and this makes us sad. Sometimes we need that reminder that we are loved, and that’s where the 14th comes in.
You don’t need gifts to do this.
On Valentine’s Day, instead of getting caught up in flower purchases, instead of crying about being alone, reflect. Remember how good it feels to love and to be loved, and make sure you spread the love- spiritually. Saying I love you speaks louder than giving chocolate, trust me.
Use the 14th of February as a refresher. Remind yourself how lucky you are to have family and friends that love you, remind them how much you love them. Love is one of the most powerful forces mankind knows. It is tiring, and we often need to be reminded to use it. This Valentine’s Day I want you to remember the importance of love, and remember how good it feels to give and receive it. I’ll leave you with this;
“The reason why all men honor love is because it looks up, and not down; aspires and not despairs” – R.W.E.
